SUMMARY
What if we leverage AI to bridge aspirations and opportunity?
Employees struggle to map aspirations to clear learning paths, while HR lacks visibility into role-ready internal talent. This creates friction in both upskilling and internal hiring.
We set out to bridge this gap by building an AI-driven system that aligns employee goals with skill development and enables HR to identify role-ready candidates from within.
The Research
I conducted 10+ user interviews to understand challenges. Employees often struggled to identify which role they should grow into or what skills they would need. HR teams faced inconsistent guidance due to manual tracking and limited visibility into employee progress, causing learning momentum to drop.
The Solution
Designed a guided AI learning assistant that helps HR identify skill gaps and deliver personalized development paths, so employees can confidently grow with structured next steps.
PROBLEM
Employees want to upskill but lack clarity on what to learn and how to grow, while HR teams struggle to provide personalized guidance at scale.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES
Responsible AI by design
To keep design decisions aligned with the product vision and grounded in responsible AI, I defined a set of guiding principles.

Transparent recommendations
Ensure users understand how and why learning paths or candidates are suggested.

User control over AI outputs
Allow users to refine inputs and override recommendations to reflect their intent and context.

Balanced inputs to reduce bias
Combine system data with user-defined inputs to avoid over-reliance on historical or incomplete information.

AI as guidance, not automation
Design AI to support decision-making while keeping users in control of final actions.
FINAL DESIGNS
Getting started without friction
Onboarding minimizes friction through Workday integration and resume upload, enabling quick profile setup with minimal input. Users can review imported data and add aspirational skills, ensuring recommendations aren’t solely driven by historical data. This balance of automation and control improves the accuracy of personalized learning paths.
From goals to learning paths
Employees often felt lost in traditional learning platforms, which lacked flexibility around preferences and nuanced queries. An AI assistant guides discovery by surfacing relevant courses and generating personalized learning paths, grounding recommendations in user inputs like skills and goals to keep them transparent and trustworthy.
Making workforce insights actionable
HR managers relied on spreadsheets that didn’t scale with growing teams and skill demands. Feedback highlighted the need for immediate visibility into skill demand and role alignment. A dashboard surfaces key insights upfront, making data clear and actionable enabling faster identification of gaps and more confident hiring decisions.
Identifying the right talent faster
Evaluating candidates meant stitching together multiple sources, making it hard to assess fit efficiently. A unified, AI-assisted workflow brings evaluation into one interface, surfacing clear matching criteria for transparency. This reduces evaluation to a guided interaction, enabling faster decisions while preserving human oversight.
RETROSPECTIVE
What I learned from this project
Designing for actionable insight
While designing the HR dashboard, I learned the importance of understanding how users interpret data. This pushed me to focus on surfacing only what was critical and ensuring insights were immediately actionable.
Driving clarity through collaboration
Working closely with developers, product, and strategy teams helped refine both the problem and the solution. Clear annotations, structured discussions, and continuous feedback loops were key in shaping a cohesive and effective product.
